Coulson maintained that “religious faith is essential for the responsible use of science.” He is credited with coining the term “God of the Gaps” in which it is claimed that God is something man invented to explain what he did not understand. Coulson was adamantly opposed to this concept and said:

“There is no ‘God of the gaps’ to take over at those strategic places where science fails. The reason for that is that gaps of this sort have the unpreventable habit of shrinking.” “Either God is in the whole of Nature with no gaps or He's not there at all.”

Coulson went on to show that his faith in God had been strengthened by his research.
